My African Experience
Lighthouse Care CentresI spent a combined 6 months working with Lighthouse Care Centres in a variety of capacities. I tutored students, helped redesign their website, directed a camp for the boys in the orphan homes and shadowed the director, Kevin Ward. I would be lying if I didn't say that I gained far more from the experience than I was able to give. I gained an up close and personal look at the AIDS epidemic (Swaziland's life expectancy has dropped to the low 30's as a result of HIV and related causes.). I also gained a great deal of perspective on the impact of foreign aid agencies, the work of the United Nations and the obstacles to bringing change to third world countries.
African Travel ExperienceAfter spending several months volunteering I spent an additional two months touring northeastern Africa. I had the opportunity to spend three weeks in Egypt a few years prior to the Arab Spring. I also had the opportunity to experience Sudan before it split into two separate countries. In addition, I visited orthodox Christian sites in Ethiopia, Maasi villages in Kenya and memorial sites of the Rwandan genocide of 1994. To say I gained a better perspective of the world and the lives that people lead is an understatement.
