Eagle Time Research
Theme: American Movement from 1860-1940

Our theme is tracking four major movements of American people over an 80 year period. This theme will focus on the movement of the people, why they moved and the impact of their movement. It should also include information or a sub theme about the actual ways people were transported or moved because it changed dramatically over this 80 year period.

Movement of Freed Slaves

The focus of this group is on what happened to the freed slaves after the Civil War ended and they became free. It may include information about the search for land of their own. It could include the movement westward of the Exodusters or the wandering of those searching for family members who had been sold away.

Movement to America

This section is going to focus on movement into America around the Turn of the Century and should include Angel Island in the West and Ellis Island in the East. The Angel Island portion will track the movement of Asians into America and the Ellis Island portion will track the immigration of European immigrants.

Movement Westward

The westward expansion movement happened throughout the 1800's, but this exhibit is going to focus mainly on the key parts of the movement after 1860. This should include the Homestead Act and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. It could also hit on the cattle trails and continued conflict with the American Indians and their continued movement further west.

Movement in Tough Times

This exhibit will focus on movement around America as a result of the Great Depression and the Dustbowl. It could include workers moving around the countries searching for work or joining work programs that took them around the country working on conservation projects. It could also focus on farmers whose farms were destroyed during the dust storms and were forced to abandon their farms.
