SS5H3 The student will describe how life changed in America at the Turn of the Century.
a. Describe the role of the cattle trails in the late 19th century; include the Black Cowboys of Texas, the Great Western Cattle Trail and the Chisholm Trail.
b. Describe the impact on American life of the Wright brothers (flight), George Washington Carver (science), Alexander Graham Bell (communication) and Thomas Edison (electricity).
c. Explain how William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt expanded America's role in the world; include the Spanish American War and the building of the Panama Canal.
d. Describe the reasons people emigrated to the United States, from where they emigrated and where they settled.

Wilbur & Orville Wright--TransportationThe Wright brothers are known as the founders of aviation, following their first successful 12 second flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This short flight on December 17, 1903, would begin a whole new era in human history--the age of flight.

Alexander Graham Bell--CommunicationAlexander Graham Bell was a famous inventor who successfully patented a working telephone in 1876. The communication age was about to explode with new inventions. Thomas Edison--ElectricityThomas Edison was a famous inventor who was granted more than 1,000 patents in his lifetime. His most famous invention was of the electric lightbulb. Edison failed many times before he finally got the lightbulb to work. For more information you can visit thomasedison.com. George Washington Carver--Agricultural ScienceGeorge Washington Carver was a famous African American chemist, who discovered hundreds of ways to use agricultural products. He was especially famous for his invention involving peanuts. Farmers loved Carver's work, because he taught them farming techniques to get better crops without spending more money. Find more about Carver here. The movie below gives a brief history of Carver's life (the vocabulary is a bit advanced in this video).
