Saipan Experience
Student Teaching #1My University required me to complete two different student teaching experiences. My first experience was on the island of Saipan, which is virtually unknown to all but World War II buffs. I spent two months teaching P.E., government and history classes to students from grades 4-9. I gained far more from my experience than simple teaching experience, though. I learned a great deal about World War II history and even had the opportunity to visit the nearby island of Tinian, where the atomic bombs were kept prior to being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I also learned a great deal about various cultures, because Saipan has a large population of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Filipino and native islanders. The actual teaching experience went very smoothly because the students at this private school were very motivated to learn and the school environment was very strict and structured.
